This whole blogging experience will be much easier once I have Wi-Fi at my apartment, until then I have become a regular at starbucks (yes Dad, a regular at a coffee shop- not a bar).
I have now experienced my first European “strike” – basically what I have gathered from the whole ordeal is- it allows everyone to have a day off of work during the week. The strikes here are planned events that consist of a lot of yelling/chanting and some sort of march through a big city, but of course once siesta time rolls around things quiet down… It really had no affect on my day- and im assuming nor the Spanish government.
(also I would like all reading to be aware- at starbucks right now there is a currently a young couple sitting in the chairs directly in front of me being a tad more than affectionate and it is very distracting)
Nonetheless, I am SO excited about our apartment find. I made the first of what I assume will be many, trips to ikea. My room is slowly coming together, I bought some fresh flowers today and it added a nice touch. On the list for now: a rug, more hangers, wall décor and other small things to make it more like “home”. The grandmother who lives across the basement from us is pretty hilarious. She is the woman who showed us the flat originally, she has already asked to come into our place on three separate occasions to see how everything is coming along. Today she greeted us after siesta on the patio in her robe, curlers, and a mirror so she could pluck her eyebrows, at her little table next to our door and her close line- thank you for that Laura…
I went to my school for the first time and they were all very welcoming and friendly. The kids were adorable! I am with three other auxiliaries de conversacion. One from Philly another from Boston and one from Russia, I have only met the one from Boston and she did the program last year at the same school. She really enjoyed the school and gave me as much inside information as possible. I have to be back at school at 9:00 am on Monday and then I will get my schedule so I can kind of get an idea as to what life will be like here.
I think all of last week has finally caught up with me- I am exhausted lately! Becca and I did get our list checked off today- we got money exchanged and we also got our Metro passes. These passes run monthly, so now I won’t need to pay every time I take the metro J
I think for now I am going to head back to the piso and get a good night’s sleep
Until my next starbucks trip, adios.
